Seascapes

These paintings are inspired by my life in Northern California close to the Pacific Ocean. Even though my landscapes and seascapes are mostly abstract paintings, careful observation in nature is always at the beginning. In the studio I summon my memory, rarely supported by a photograph. As the painting unfolds, I try to capture the mood the scene evoked in me when I first observed it.

Cityscapes Landscapes

I always enjoy visiting and living in big cities, they have something exhilarating for me. When I am new to a city I do a lot of walking to capture the mood and energy around me to get a feel for the people living there. The starting point for my cityscapes can be a prominent building, a high-rise, a bridge, a roadway or a part of a dilapidated waterfront warehouse. It is not a specific space I paint. It is rather the abstraction of the elements painted with the light and its reflection on walls, windows and roadways that brings out the vitality and energy of the place that the viewer might engage with.

Urban Impressions

While the chaos of sound, speed, and rhythm in our metropolises creates a sense of instability, it also is an essential source of energy that I use to create my detailed abstract drawings. As in my paintings, my urban environment provides the point of departure. I am interested in the impact our surroundings have on us, even when we are unaware that they do. The relationship between manmade structures and the natural world has a meaning I want to continue to explore.

Figurative

Recently my focus shifted from detailed drawings with geometric shapes and lines, to painting and drawing figurative works on paper. I wanted to explore the notion of isolation despite the fact that most of us live in cities - in cities that are quite crowded. Our metropolises have never given us more opportunity to meet, to connect, to socialize. Yet, as a society we have never been so isolated, so lonely, and often so without meaningful connections. We seem to be too self-absorbed, too glued to our electronic devices to be aware of the world and fellow humans around us and the unique qualities each of us possesses. My goal is to challenge us to explore questions of urbanism and social interaction and the consequences of our attitudes.

Black & White

What started out as an exploration in pen and ink on paper with a few small studies, developed into larger drawings that hold my interest since. Here I work out my visual vocabulary for other drawings and – sometimes – paintings as well. Working monochrome allows for a special focus on line, shapes, pattern, spatial depth and perspective. Small variations in line strength or tonal value, as well as the overlay of patterns allows new discoveries.

Abstract Drawings

With my strong interest in architecture and my ongoing inquiry into our urban environment it seemed only natural to continue to work in my drawings with the same subject matter my paintings explore. A colored background in ink, which is much like working with watercolor, provides the foil upon which the drawing can take shape. The background is considered carefully before the first line is added. Here I select colors and composition intuitively. The minimal abstract shapes layered over the background merely suggest an atmosphere of an urban environment. It is up to the viewer to draw her own conclusions.
